The order cap is 15 units, we all know that!  The question is: how do you split your Combat Groups?  When I began my Infinity Journey I would always take 15 units in all of my O12 lists and split them 10-5, this gave me the Flexibility to complete Classified Cards, and the order generation to be maneuverable around on the table, but unfortunately I never had much fire power.  I was often left with a handful of order generators and no attack units on turn 2.

In my 10 – 5 split the small group would contain long range gun fighters like Knauf or the Zeta, that could put down enemy ARO pieces with about 5 or less activations.  The Bigger group Contained the short ranged fighters and specialists who required more activations to move up the board.  In modern Infinity I have found this type of split to be ineffective, particularly for O12 who can have 15 mediocre troops and nothing effective.

I have tried 8-7 group splits, with 2 attack groups.  This helps if you get the first turn, as your opponent can only take 2 orders from a single group.  If you mix this strategy in with Hidden Deployment or Airborne Deployment, your opponent will be very confused, however that can lead to an argumentative game, so watch out.  This type of split comes from attack focused armies like Ariadna.

Recently I have been playing against some new opponents who often have only a single unit in the second Combat Group, usually an EVO remote.  Giving them a 10 – 1 split.  Even though there were less pieces on the board the enemy units were considerably stronger than mine because they cost more points.  I was also continuously concerned that the second group might also contain a hidden sniper of some type.  This type of split comes from Heavy Infantry focused armies like Military Orders and Invincible Army.

Another split for the order groups is 9-6, which seems a little strange at first.  This split allows you to put several cheap threats into the smaller group and then at the start of your turn you can spend a command token to move the most well positioned piece into the big group.  This type of split is for armies with cheap attack pieces like Haqqislam.

In my list I like to split my units 10-3.  I have found this to be good with both Corregidor and Generic O12.  The second group usually contains units like Motorised Bounty Hunters, Missile REMs, Engineers/Doctors, Total Reaction REMs or season 14 Sensor REMs, because they only need a few orders each turn.
